  1. Where do I find the Comment Fic collection on AO3?

Theparent collection for all years of Comment Fic fills is BiteSized Bits of Fic.There is a subcollection for each year from 2008 to 2015.

  1. Which subcollection do I put my work in?
If you've filled a prompt and posted it to AO3, please add it to the collection. They're grouped by year. Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2008, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2009, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2010, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2011, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2012, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2013, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2014, Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2015 and Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016.

Ifyou filled a prompt given in a previous year, please add it to both collections. For example, if you filled a prompt from 2013 in the year 2014, the fic would be added to both collections.

  1. What if I don’t know which year the prompt was in?

If you don't know which year the prompt is in, just add your fic to the year you wrote the fic in.

  1. What if I don’t remember which year I wrote the fic?

If you don't remember and cannot easily determine which year you wrote afic, you may add it to the parent collection.

  1. Are my stories crossposted to AO3 without my opting in?

Comment Fic volunteers will not crosspost your work to Archive of Our Own, nor will we create any work in your name.

We will bookmark your work by creating a link to the fill where it's posted onLiveJournal. The information included in this bookmark is:

the unlinked LiveJournal name you posted the fill under

the appropriate fandom(s) and character(s)

the prompt you filled

the title of your fill as listed on LiveJournal

the theme of the post

  1. What is the difference between a bookmark and an archived work?

An archived work is posted on Archive of Our Own using their system. A bookmark is simply a link to your work and serves as an index of fills for Comment Fic.

  1. Why are stories both bookmarked and archived as works?

Bookmarks allow users to locate fills based on the prompt, fandom, and/or theLiveJournal name, as well as enable us to link back to theLiveJournal fill itself.

Archived works are entirely voluntary on the part of Comment Fic writers, who decide whether to crosspost to AO3 or not and make their works more visible to the AO3 community.

  1. How do I opt my stories out of being bookmarked?

Ifyou explicity do not wish us to index your fills, please comment to this post to opt out of the bookmarking.

  1. Who bookmarks my fills in the collection?

Right now, scribblemyname (AO3) | scribble-myname (LJ) is bookmarking fills on AO3. If you want to volunteer to help bookmark, please contact simplyn2deep, the owner of the Comment Fic community.

Opt out request. I post all my stuff to AO3 but please don't bookmark my fills.

You got it!

Thank you.

*puts all his fills into the collections*

Thanks for your hard work, mods!

This is great work. I can't offer my services just yet (college is kicking my ass hard) but maybe later in 2015 :)

I'm wondering if there would even be a need to bookmark a writer's fills if they post to AO3 already? I always cross-post and tag my fics and I added them to the community, so if it would just be easier on the archivists, I can just opt out of bookmarking.

Bookmarks serve to make it easy to see filled prompts. They are very geared around the prompt, not the story, so serve a different purpose.

If you want to be opted out, I have no problem with that, but as for ease, it's easier to have a shorter list of opt-outs to remember.

Okay, I don't need to opt out then! Just wondering. Thanks for the reply. :-)

I have posted way more fills here than I'll be adding to A03 (basically because there's so many) -- but how do y'all know if it's already been archived at A03? Lots of the fics I've left here weren't titled till I put them in my LJ.

I don't know. If you're opted out, I will skip everything with your username on the fill. If you don't opt out, I include everything whether it's been crossposted to AO3 or not, which is why the title is the title as it is on the fill here. If there's no title here, the bookmark will say untitled or whatever else you used as the subject line.

Basically, I just go through one post, bookmarking all the fills, then move to the next post.

Hmm. I won't opt out because I do have so much. *shrugs*

This may be a stupid question, but why not bookmark the works on AO3 instead of linking to LJ? That is, if the person filling the prompt provides a link here. (Not saying you need to go looking yourself.)

Most are not provided here. If the fill is posted to AO3 and only linked here, then we bookmark the AO3 fic.

Bookmarking though is based around indexing what happens on this community and gives preference to the activity here, not all of which is crossposted.

So, does that mean you'll only bookmark works on AO3 if the comment consists of nothing more than a link? I post everything above 100 words to AO3 and always provide a link, because I practically live there nowadays. But I also post the text here, or part of it, depending on length. So how do you handle that?
Nov. 30th, 2014 11:59 pm (UTC)

If you add your work to the collection, bookmarking it really would be redundant. Bookmarks index filled prompts here. I don't even check AO3 for the work. I link to the comment with your text here.

I don't quite understand. The person who left the link may also have added their fic to the Collection. In that case, bookmarking it would also be redundant. But I see what you mean about redundancy.

It can seem that way but it is not. First off, I will never link to AO3 in a bookmark unless the fill is ONLY available there.

The bookmark is wrapped around the prompt that was filled. The work may not even mention the prompt and is based around the fill.

Bookmarks are for browsing filled prompts and is an index based on the prompts. It's a different way of searching through material.

Bookmarks are also aimed at indexing this comm, whereas works provide an alternative archive that is also not as complete. They serve a different function.

After reading the FAQ and the comments here, I'm not opting out of bookmarking. (I think I might have said no to it some months ago, but I can't remember.)

All of my fills that are 50 words and over are cross-posted to AO3. So, that's everything except for some 6-word and 10-word fills.
Dec. 7th, 2014 09:48 pm (UTC)
I'd like to opt out of bookmarking.
Dec. 7th, 2014 10:50 pm (UTC)
Kay. Will double check for any already bookmarked tomorrow.
Dec. 7th, 2014 10:52 pm (UTC)
Thank you. I crosspost on AO3 myself, but there's certain fills I'd rather just stay here with no external links to them or anything.
Dec. 7th, 2014 11:10 pm (UTC)
Makes sense. On a personal note, I didn't find a link to your ao3 so gifted my crossposts to yuidirnt. Would you rather I continue or gift to your ao3 account?
Dec. 7th, 2014 11:16 pm (UTC)
Sorry, I have a link to my AO3 in the pinned post on my journal, but I guess it's not really evident.

Dec. 7th, 2014 11:17 pm (UTC)
No problem. I must have simply missed it. Thanks!

Would like to opt out of bookmarking! I'd like to pick and choose which things go on AO3.

If I do it manually, all I need to do is add it to the collection, yes?
Oct. 3rd, 2015 10:53 am (UTC)
Yes, that is correct.
Oct. 3rd, 2015 12:45 pm (UTC)
That's perfect for me! Thank you!
Oct. 9th, 2015 09:43 pm (UTC)
Noted! (I am horribly behind on bookmarking.)
Oct. 9th, 2015 09:09 pm (UTC)
I would like to opt-out of bookmarking myself, too.
