One character has to step into another character's role (or pretend to be that character, etc) because the second character isn't there. Maybe he's sick, or maybe she's away on vacation. Maybe the first character is the only person in to the office that day, so to speak, and has to pretend to be everybody. A few dopplegangers wouldn't go amiss either. ;) Any fandom and characters will work today.
